Technical Director

In this Technical Director role, you lead technical delivery and quality across a Defence domain area, shaping strategy, governance, and growth. You will collaborate with business and account managers to plan delivery and foster long-term capability, while embedding safety and regulatory compliance. You’ll act as a senior technical interface to stakeholders, drive innovation, and support bids and capability development. The position offers cross-site travel and broad impact within a renowned, safety-critical engineering group.

• Overall accountability for technical delivery and quality in your Defence area
• Collaborate with Business and Account Managers to develop Budget Delivery Plans and Key Account Plans
• Embed safety and continuous improvement in project delivery and decisions
• Maintain strong client relationships and act as senior technical interface with Engineering Directors
• Ensure compliance with technical, quality, and regulatory standards (QMS)
• Develop and implement technical roadmaps aligning capability with opportunities
• Drive technical innovation and support business development through leadership
• Support Bid/No Bid reviews and delivery strategies for future projects
• Champion technical excellence and professional development across teams
• Act as escalation point for technical issues from project teams or clients
• Support enterprise bids, strategic initiatives, and capability development
• Promote clear communication of strategy and objectives to engage employees
• Lead recruitment for strategic/technical hires to grow high-performing teams
• Drive continuous improvement of internal procedures, processes and best practices
• Collaborate with AEIL Directors for engineering assurance and capability development

• Significant defence industry experience, especially Naval Nuclear environments
• 10+ years leading multidisciplinary engineering teams on major infrastructure projects
• Experience managing full project lifecycle from Concept Design to Installation
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management to influence senior clients
• Experience developing strategic/operational value propositions to drive growth
• Strong understanding of CDM Regulations, Machinery Directive, and PED
• Experience with QMS and BMS systems
• Strong commercial awareness; NEC3/NEC4 contracts experience is advantageous
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) with progression toward Fellow (FEng)
