They are now seeking a
Technical Service & Development Chemist
Water Based Industrial Coatings . This position will be based at their site in Wrexham, Wales. It is a full-time permanent role and will report to their Technical Manager
Job Purpose The role combines laboratory product development with practical technical service. The postholder will help my client develop and improve water-based industrial coatings, investigate technical issues, prepare and manage customer samples, support product trials and provide hands-on guidance to new and existing customers. The role acts as a practical link between the laboratory, production, sales team and customer application process.
Key Responsibilities Product development and formulation support Plan and carry out laboratory development work on new and existing water-based industrial coatings under the direction of the Technical Manager. Prepare laboratory batches accurately and record formulations, raw-material details, methods, observations and results. Assess properties such as viscosity, density, gloss, colour, opacity, drying, adhesion, hardness, water resistance, sag resistance and application behaviour as appropriate to the project. Compare trial formulations against defined targets, existing products and customer requirements. Support scale-up from laboratory work to production trial batches and assist with the evaluation of manufacturing results. Technical problem-solving Investigate product, batch and application issues reported by customers, production, quality control or sales. Gather the relevant facts before drawing conclusions, including substrate, preparation, application method, film build, drying conditions, equipment, thinning and environmental conditions. Reproduce issues in the laboratory where reasonably possible and document findings clearly. Identify likely root causes, corrective actions and preventative actions, escalating matters that require formal technical approval. Samples and customer trials Prepare, label and organise customer samples and trial materials accurately and on time. Confirm that samples match the agreed product, colour, sheen, packaging and trial objective. Create a simple trial plan before significant customer trials, including application conditions, success criteria and responsibilities. Attend trials at customer premises and assist with product set-up, spray or application checks, observations and adjustments within approved limits. Produce concise trial reports with results, photographs where appropriate, agreed actions and follow-up dates. Customer technical service Visit potential new customers with field sales to understand substrates, processes, existing coatings, equipment, quality requirements and performance problems. Support existing customers with product selection, correct use, storage, mixing, thinning, film build, drying and application guidance. Provide practical product and spray-equipment training relevant to my clients products and the customer process. Help customers introduce water-based coatings successfully by considering the complete application process rather than the paint alone. Sales support Provide credible technical input during customer meetings, site surveys and opportunity qualification. Help translate customer problems into clear technical requirements and realistic trial objectives. Support sample selection, trial preparation, technical presentations and follow-up actions. Feed customer and market observations back to the Technical Manager and wider business. Keep the CRM or agreed internal records updated with technical actions and customer commitments where required. Production and quality support Assist with technical investigation of unusual batches, raw-material changes and manufacturing issues. Work with production and QC to improve test methods, instructions and repeatability. Provide practical laboratory support for approved raw-material alternatives and formulation changes. Laboratory standards, safety and housekeeping Work safely with coatings raw materials and laboratory equipment in accordance with COSHH, SDS information and company procedures. Maintain clean, organised and correctly labelled laboratory work areas, samples and retained materials. Protect confidential formulations, customer information and company know-how. Documentation and communication Maintain complete and traceable laboratory records. Write clear technical notes, customer visit reports, trial reports and investigation summaries. Provide regular progress updates against agreed development and customer-support priorities.
Qualifications and Experience Practical experience in either Paint, Coatings, Inks, Adhesives, Chemicals, Surface Finishing or a closely related technical environment. Evidence of laboratory, application, testing or troubleshooting work. Able to follow formulations and test methods accurately, observe differences, record results and draw sensible conclusions. Comfortable speaking with customers, asking structured questions and explaining technical points clearly. Practical, curious, organised, evidence-led and willing to take ownership of actions. Clear written English and confident verbal communication. Able to use standard office systems and maintain accurate electronic records. Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to customer sites when required. In return, our client is offering a basic salary of £35,000 per annum plus benefits (salary is negotiable and dependent on experience).
