Overview

In this role you will apply high-resolution mass spectrometry to metabolite identification and structure elucidation, supporting regulatory and non-regulatory studies. You’ll work across in vitro, in vivo, clinical, and biological/large-molecule programs within the Metabolism team, contributing to method development, scientific reporting, and client discussions. You will also mentor colleagues, drive process improvements, and help grow the department’s external profile through publications and presentations. This is a chance to shape metabolite science in a global CRO/CDMO environment and impact drug discovery and development.

Responsibilities
  • Act as technical expert in metabolite identification and structure elucidation using high-resolution mass spectrometry
  • Conduct analytical and metabolite identification work for regulatory and non-regulatory studies per study plans and timelines
  • Support studies across in vitro, in vivo, clinical, large molecule/biological, and environmental fate programmes
  • Develop and optimise LC-MS/MS chromatographic methods within the group and wider Metabolism Department
  • Interpret analytical data and prepare scientific updates, study documentation, and report contributions
  • Collaborate with Study Directors and Analytical Project Managers to ensure successful delivery of client projects
  • Contribute scientifically to client communications and discussions
  • Develop training materials and deliver training in area of specialism
  • Mentor and support colleagues by sharing technical knowledge and best practice
  • Lead process improvement and new service development projects within specialist area
  • Maintain responsibility for assigned equipment, software, and laboratory areas
  • Address findings from QA audits and process inspections
  • Maintain and write SOPs as required
  • Raise external profile of the department via publications, posters, presentations, and expert groups
  • Ensure work complies with Health & Safety, GxP, study plans, SOPs, and company procedures
Key requirements
  • PhD, MSc or BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related discipline
  • Metabolite identification experience in CRO/pharma/agrochemical environments desirable
  • Strong chromatographic method development experience
  • Experience in GLP or regulated lab environments beneficial
  • Proficient with high-resolution MS platforms (Waters Vion, Thermo Q Exactive)
  • Experience with Xcalibur, Waters UNIFI, and Compound Discoverer
  • Strong knowledge of metabolism and metabolic reactions
  • Excellent data interpretation, reporting, and presentation skills
  • Confident written and verbal communication for client discussions
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, prioritisation, and scheduling skills
  • Experience coaching/mentoring or staff development
  • Good project management skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Meticulous approach to lab and written work
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines
