WINTEL Engineer
Astuco Ltd
About the role - Overview
Astuco is recruiting WINTEL Engineers to work hands‑on across the Windows estate underpinning a major UK Defence programme. Three positions are available.
The role sits with Microsoft server technologies and the enterprise services layered on top, all running on heavily virtualised infrastructure. You'll see the platform through every stage - initial build and configuration, integration and test, then keeping it running once it is live - inside secure and regulated environments.
Responsibilities
- Stand up and look after Windows Server estates, from initial installation through day‑to‑day configuration.
- Run the Microsoft services layer: Active Directory, Group Policy, Exchange, SQL, WSUS and PKI, plus the applications riding on them.
- Administer Windows workloads hosted on virtualised platforms.
- Keep availability where it needs to be through patching, backup and restore routines.
- Diagnose and clear technical faults wherever they surface in the infrastructure stack.
- Write and review the engineering paperwork - designs, build guides and operational procedures.
- Back the wider effort on system test, integration and commissioning.
- Pick up incidents and service requests alongside Service Management and see them through.
- Push automation and consistency into how the Windows estate is built and maintained.
- Work to programme timelines, engineering standards and the security rules that apply.
Candidate Requirements - Essential
- Active SC clearance, and willingness to undergo DV.
- Deep experience of Windows Server in enterprise settings - 2012R2, 2016 and the releases since.
- Building and running Active Directory where security matters.
- Breadth across the Microsoft estate: PKI, DNS, DHCP, Exchange, SQL and WSUS.
- Comfortable supporting Windows workloads that sit on virtualised infrastructure.
- The administration fundamentals - patch cycles, backup and restore, monitoring.
- PowerShell for day‑to‑day administration and automation.
- Able to write the documentation that goes with the build: LLDs, build guides, runbooks.
- Strong fault‑finding instincts and clear communication.
- Time served on complex programmes inside large technical teams.
- A working understanding of ITIL service management principles.
Candidate Requirements - Desirable
- A background in Defence, or elsewhere in the secure public sector.
- Virtualisation platforms, VMware especially.
- SCCM, SCOM or similar management and monitoring tooling.
- Some grounding in networking concepts and Cisco kit.
- Agile ways of working and the Atlassian toolset (JIRA, Confluence).
- Certification such as MCSE or ITIL.
