Overview

In this role you will operate within one of the world’s largest z/OS environments, upgrading and supporting the operating system and key ISV products. You will collaborate with engineering teams to keep systems stable, current, and efficiently performing. The position emphasizes reliability, recovery, and performance optimization at scale. This is a hands-on opportunity to shape enterprise mainframe resilience and modernization in a hybrid UK setup.

Responsibilities
  • Upgrade, maintain and support the z/OS operating system
  • Upgrade, maintain and support IBM and CA ISV products
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure stability and up-to-date systems
  • Manage hardware and logical resources across LPARs (DASD, tape, HMC)
  • Security administration using RACF or equivalent
  • Ensure data integrity and rapid recovery (DFSMShsm, FDR/ABR, FlashCopy/virtual tape)
  • Optimize throughput via RMF/SMF, OMEGAMON or MainView, and WLM tuning
  • Configure and support mainframe connectivity (VTAM, SNA, TCP/IP, OSA/Coupling)
  • Execute OS/product upgrades using SMP/E, z/OSMF, and fix/deploy tooling
  • Lead hardware refreshes, migrations, and change-control governance
  • Produce runbooks, upgrade plans, and collaborate with application/storage/network/security teams
  • Provide off-hours support for software changes
  • Stay current with IBM Redbooks, z/OS release notes, firmware, and vendor training
Key requirements
  • Multi-year z/OS systems programming experience
  • Strong Parallel Sysplex skills
  • Proficiency in z/OS, TSO/ISPF, USS, SDSF, JCL, RACF
  • Experience installing many IBM and CA products
  • Assembler and REXX scripting capabilities
  • JCL, IPL procedures, JES2/JES3, parmlib customization
  • SMP/E, z/OSMF, and fix management tooling
  • DASD/tape management and HMC/L par configurations
  • Abend analysis, IPCS, SLIP/trace tools
  • Data integrity and recovery tooling expertise
